Cocoa powder has fallen on roofs and streets: the cause was a malfunction of the plant's ventilation system
A snowfall of fine cocoa on the rooftops and streets of Olten, a Swiss town between Zurich and Basel. What happened? A malfunction of the ventilation system of the establishment of Lindt & Spruengli, one of the most famous companies in the world for the production of chocolate, which is based in the small town. Due to the strong wind blowing, the powder spread in the immediate vicinity of the plant, leaving a fine dusting of cocoa. Lidt confirmed that it was a "small defect in the cooling ventilation of one line for roasting cocoa beans ", has declared itself available to pay any cleaning costs and has ensured that the particles dispersed in the air are absolutely harmless both for people and for the environment.

The Olten plant is located right next to the railway: every year, they arrive in the town more than 400 railroad cars loaded with cocoa beans which come, via the Netherlands, from crops in West Africa and Latin America. Lindt & Spruengli was founded in 1845, employs 14,500 people worldwide and generated sales of 4.3 billion francs in 2018.
