Seasonal ingredients

First of all, it is always recommended to choose fresh vegetables is Seasonal, paying particular attention to the availability offered by the market. This choice is useful to appreciate the ingredients in their best quality, enjoy superior nutritional properties and, finally, respect the correct production times.

Their origin dates back to the beginning of the last century, when a seller of sausages American chose the long sandwiches instead of the classic rounds to serve its customers a more comfortable meal. A few years later a cartoonist drew inside the sandwich a dachshund instead of sausage, making fun of the fact that they looked a lot like each other, and called it hot dog. From there the name remained and the taste was perfected, with i würstel who took the place of sausage.

In America (and now also in Europe) you can find canopies at every street corner and thematic rooms that prepare them in real time in many variations. Hard not to let yourself be conquered. The good thing is that there is no need to leave the country to eat a good hot dog, with some makeup and with the right ingredients you can prepare them at home in a simple and fast way.

Bread for hot dogs

We begin to understand what kind of bread It is ideal for preparing hot dogs at home. The typical one, now sold in almost all supermarkets, is soft and slightly sweet, ideal to accommodate the frankfurter, the sauces and the other ingredients. If you want to do it at home, here's the recipe. For 8 sandwiches.

Ingredients

450 g of type O flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
40 g of butter
15 cl of milk
3 egg yolks
yeast for instant bread
water and salt

Method

Start by heating the butter with a little water in a small saucepan and add the milk, stirring well. In a bowl put the flour with the sugar, a pinch of salt and the egg yolks and work the dough with your hands until you get a homogeneous mixture. At this point add the butter and milk that you had already prepared and work the pasta again. Add the instant yeast and let the mixture rest in a bowl for at least an hour.

Once it has risen, divide the dough into 8 balls and knead it to obtain a cylindrical shape with a diameter of about 4 cm. Then put the sandwiches on a baking sheet with parchment paper and sprinkle them with flour before putting them in the oven. If you want even softer bread you can brush it with milk before cooking it. Put them in the oven for about 20 minutes at a temperature of 200 °: they will be ready when the surface is golden brown.

Hot dogs for sausages

Once you've chosen the bread, it's time to think about the main ingredient of the sandwich: the würstel. Typical ones for hot dogs are pork, spicy and not very spicy. They are boiled for about six minutes (less if only one is prepared) in unsalted water and drained well before being placed in the sandwich.

The tastiest variants for hot dogs

The classic one, the most sold in the carts of the roads of the States, it is usually seasoned with ingredients such as braised butter, onions steamed or boiled, pancetta, gherkins, cheddar cheese, sauerkraut, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. As sauces can be used delicate mustard and ketchup.

If you want to try original variations, prepare a hot dog of fish with caramelized onions or a Mexican version with the chili sauce (very spicy for those who love the genre), or, if you want to stay lighter, the one with turkey and vegetables.
