Food Forest, a forest to eat

Food Forest is a project born from the collaboration between the public body North Milan Park ed Etifor, a spin-off of the University of Padua that deals with the development of services and products for the enhancement of nature: "The aim of the project is above all educational", explained Riccardo Gini, director of the park. "People can recognize trees and shrubs that produce fruits and berries that they normally eat, so they can appreciate them when they find them in the spontaneous woods in the plains and in the countryside."

From the forest to the kitchen

Jujube, pomegranate, mulberry, Japan goumi, azarole, medlar, Rosehip, hawthorn, buckthorn, FIG, elder, blackthorn, wild pear, cherry, wild apple, lime, oak, dogwood, hornbeam, ash, core, maple: the species selected for the project are all indigenous or well integrated into the territory. The first plantings will take place next November and in two to four years the forest will begin to be productive. Access will not be free, but will take place through public events and organized visits: the didactic itineraries, different according to the season, will lead to the discovery of the characteristics of the plants with indications on how to use flowers, fruits and berries in the kitchen. Adopt a tree

Anyone can contribute to the birth of the forest adopting a tree: just go to the site WOWNature, choose a tree of your favorite species and pay your contribution. The project is also supported by initiatives such as that of the restaurants specializing in natural cuisine That’s Steam: 50% of the proceeds from vegetarian dishes consumed during Green Saturdays, or on Saturdays of the year starting from last July, it will be donated to support the forestation project.

The blackthorn

Every day, for over ten years, he has been feeding more than 300 homeless people in Rome. For his great work, Dino Impagliazzo, ninety years old and determination to sell, will be awarded the recognition of Commander of the Order of Merit by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The "chef of the poor" is one of the 32 "heroes of our day" rewarded for their high commitment in various areas.

But the initiative of Dino Impagliazzo is worthy not only for the attention paid to the poor between the stations of Rome Tuscolana, Ostiense and in the colonnade of San Pietro, but also because it uses food products that would otherwise have to be thrown away: the "chef of the poor" Manages to prepare his hot dishes thanks to donations of food from merchants, supermarkets in surplus or upcoming food.

Dino Impagliazzo, together with his wife Fernanda, is part of a family dedicated to helping others: he is the father of Marco, president of Community of Sant’Egidio and three other brothers engaged, in different ways, in the social sphere. In these days Impagliazzo has told students of Lumsa University his life experience dedicated to others. In 2018, he had already received the International Carthage 2.0 Award in the "Solidarity" section, intended for those who have contributed, in Italy and abroad, to the spread of culture and knowledge in different sectors. In 2016 he met Pope Francis, greeting him from all the homeless people in Rome and inviting him to serve the soup kitchen organized daily by him and by the non-profit volunteers RomAmor of which Dino is president. In recent months, the chef has also been the protagonist of a fun gag together with Chef Rubio, who has also always been involved in social work.
