Nero d'Avola Vrucara 2014 Fudo Montoni – Italian Cuisine

Nero d'Avola Vrucara 2014 Fudo Montoni

In the heart of Sicily, discovering a great red wine that comes from ancient plants

Imagine an infinite space, a rough road, no sign of human presence for miles, no telephone signal, the navigator who continues to repeat "recalculation" … We are not in some African desert or in an endless steppe of the East, but in Italy, in the marvelous intact heart of Sicily. Here, in the majestic silence of the Madonie, is Feudo Montoni, which with its founding date of 1469, is one of the oldest wineries in Sicily.

The company was bought at the end of the nineteenth century by Rosario Sireci, grandfather of the current owner Fabio Sireci, and has 80 hectares of property, of which 25 are cultivated in vineyards under organic conditions, at an altitude between 500 and 800 meters. The particular intact environment in which Feudo Montoni stands has ensured that they have been kept in excellent condition vine-old vineyards, with plants, raised in alberello, even 100 years old. From these comes one of the most exciting reds of Sicily, the Vrucara, which takes its name from the vruca, a dialect word to indicate bushes of wild herbs, which smell of mint and incense and grow around the vineyard, a real cru, with clayey and sandy soils. This red wine, made from pure Nero d'Avola grapes, retains the charm of an ancient wine, perhaps because the grapes are pressed with an old wine press and its more artisanal production could not be: it has aromas of cherry in the spirit , spices, liquorice and balsamic herbs and, when tasted, it strikes for soft and balanced tannins and velvety smoothness, supported by a fresh and salty vein. A tip: uncork the bottle a couple of hours before serving.

Why now: because in a world where everything is more and more homologated, it is a wine that shuns fashion and time.
As did: ferments in cement with a maceration on the skins of about 26 days, then refines for 45 months in cement, then for 6 months in cask and, finally, for another 6 months in bottle.
To combine with: red meats, roasts, game, cured meats and hard mature cheeses.

Serve it to: 18 ° C.
Price: 29 euros.
