Rome in summer: aperitif on the terrace with a view

The desire to be outdoors grows, with the most beautiful terraces in the capital that open to enjoy coolness and distance

Summer 2020 will probably be a one-off. A Rome so dedicated to the Romans had never been seen and many hope that it will never be seen again, if only for economic reasons. Premises arise in places usually dedicated to events and weddings, gardens and terraces open up that dominate the city's great beauty. The most beautiful places are the fullest ones, but always with the appropriate security measures, because the watchword of this summer is "distancing".

Vista 101 – Rome Cavalieri

The Cavalieri hotel famously has one of the most beautiful terraces in the city. Certainly the one that can boast a 360 ° view, which embraces in one glance the dome of San Pietro, the Vittoriano and the Colosseum, showing the majesty of Rome. Right next to the terrace on which La Pergola dominates the city, there is another terrace that is usually used by the property for events and weddings. And if you normally have to be invited to access it, here this year it opens to the public under the name of Vista 101 (number that does not exist among the hotel rooms, but it is the street number of via Alberto Cadlolo from which you enter the Cavalieri ). Here you can have a drink at sunset on the rooftop, to choose between the cocktails created by Angelo Severini, bartender of the Tiepolo Lounge & Terrace, accompanied by the sides prepared by chef Fabio Boschero and the sweetness of pastry chef Dario Nuti.

Hi-Res

International atmospheres, local public. This is the characteristic of the Hi-Res, restaurant / cocktail bar at the top of the Hotel Valadier, which has successfully reopened its beautiful terrace in the center of Rome, a stone's throw from Piazza del Popolo. To characterize the room, a state-of-the-art mobile structure, which allows you to close and open the glass panels according to the wind and close it completely in winter, leaving the view unchanged. The evening at Hi-Res winds between aperitifs and dinners, by chef Gabriele Cordaro, who offers a refined fish-based menu, to arrive after dinner between a cocktail and a glass of wine (over 600 labels in the cellar) . The patron Daniele Lassalandra, always in search of international atmospheres, takes care of the creative and cultural aspect of the lounge, where the DJ set never fails.

The Court

The cocktail bar of Palazzo Manfredi returns, from whose mezzanine terrace you can almost touch the Colosseum, sipping champagne or one of the cocktails of the international barman Matteo Zed. The atmosphere is discreet luxury and for the occasion you can also choose one of the secluded terraces that belong to the suites next to the bar, momentarily closed waiting for the great return of tourists. Specialized in bitters, on which he has also written a book, bar manager Matteo Zed has set up a drink list that ranges from his signature cocktails called "Untouchables", untouchable, to classics and twist on classic. There is no lack of touches of high mixing, thanks to The Court Lab, with the use of machines such as rotovapor or techniques such as fat washing and fermentation.

Acquaroof Terrazza Molinari

Another tour, another cocktail bar on the rooftop of a luxury hotel. In this case we are on the edge of via di Ripetta, in The First Roma Arte Hotel, which has already become Acquaroof Terrazza Molinari since last year. Alessandro Simeone accompanies with his excellent drinks the food proposals designed for the terrace by the starred chef Daniele Lippi. By the way, a note on the Acquolina restaurant, which remains closed pending better times, but in the meantime offers a super-exclusive experience with the "Suite & Star" format. In practice it is possible to reserve one of the suites with private terrace for dinner, having the chef Daniele Lippi available.

Madeiterraneo / Up Sunset Bar

This time we are not at the top of a hotel, but at a department store, even if the Rinascente in via del Tritone is much more: a destination for luxury shopping in the capital, it deserves the trip even just for architecture and design and can boast an exceptional position in the center of Rome. It is necessary to take a break on the upper floor, where the two terraces on the sixth and seventh floors are managed by the couple from All’Oro, Riccardo Di Giacinto and Ramona Anello. The star chef for his pop sign has thought of a Mediterranean menu (not to contradict the name), accompanied by a selection of quick proposals, which go well with the aperitif. The ideal is to enjoy a cocktail on one of the terraces that dominate the roofs of Rome and maybe taste one of the chef's famous salty husbandzzi.

Jacoba

While waiting for the restaurant of the same name to reopen its doors, the efforts of chefs Jacopo Ricci and Piero Drago are currently concentrated on the terrace overlooking the roofs of Trastevere. Here, on the rooftop of the Hotel San Francesco, you can taste the excellent cocktails of the bar manager Giordano Cioccolini, accompanied by the whims prepared by the chefs for the occasion, from the zeppoline to the stuffed "Roman" buns, for example stuffed with vaccinara tail . In addition, you can also order the delicious fried dishes, or dishes such as the hamburger or the shard of rigatoni (amatriciana or normal).

Gnoccheria @ Giulia Restaurant

Another restaurant that is very popular with gourmets in the capital, Giulia, and which for the summer of 2020 has focused everything on the terrace, momentarily sacrificing the outdoor spaces of the b & b that overlook the restaurant. In this case, the terraces are two, overlooking the Lungotevere dei Tebaldi, connected to the kitchens of the Giulia Restaurant, from which the food proposals and beverage combinations come. In the first case, apart from the menu of the chef Pierluigi Gallo, there is the addition of the novelty of the gnoccheria proposal, tasty and delicious double versions, stuffed or Roman-style, to be tasted in the countless variations designed by the chef. A delicious side to accompany one of the bartender Gianluca Storchi's drinks or a glass of wine suggested by sommelier Fabio Romolo Buratti.

Originally, dehors in the city center

Can you dream of a plin ravioli dish in an experimentation kitchen? Maybe not always, but you can at the All’Origine restaurant, the creation of young chef Fabio Titone, from Turin with experiences in starred restaurants behind him.

"Only" 26 years old but the awareness that one cannot fly without roots, and then the "origin" is never lost sight of. Bread and pasta are made at home, as our traditional cuisine requires. And this does not prevent, however, from experimenting, from developing the technique, from daring combinations and experimentations, from playing with textures and colors. Beetroot becomes ice cream, butter is flavored with citrus fruits (and accompanies freshly baked hot bread), lavender enriches the semifreddo.

The outdoor area in the city center is a real treat for both lunch and dinner, but be sure to return also in winter because the atmosphere inside is truly enveloping. Tasting menu starting from € 50.

In Milan there is no sea, but there are terraces. That of Clotilde Brera, who overlooking San Marco square, it really tastes like summer nights, with soft lights and a loving gaze on the city.

The terrace of via Palestro

Hidden from outside eyes, albeit in a very central area. The terrace of via Palestro, in the street of the same name, is inserted inside the building of the Centro Svizzero and overlooks the very green panorama of the Indro Montanelli Gardens.

The "lunch in the garden" effect transforms, in the evening, into the right atmosphere for a candlelit dinner. In the lounge area, space reserved for an aperitif.

The menu changes seasonally and offers one creative and very balanced Mediterranean cuisine, such as homemade ravioli stuffed with Sicilian red prawns, ricotta and spinach with date sauce. Lovers of the genre will not be disappointed with the poché egg, an excellent address for choosing fish dishes. Appetizers and first courses starting from € 14.

Via Palestro, 2

Kitchen Society, creative outdoor area

The atmosphere of the terrace is that of dinners at the sea. Wooden tables and chairs, the simple equipment of when you invite your closest friends, when the highlight is the kitchen.

He, the chef Alex Seveso, baptized the proposal "Italian sushi": the aesthetics and technique are that of the rising sun, the ingredients and flavors are those of the Bel Paese. The result is an experience that is difficult to forget and to compare, as well as difficult to forget (in addition to the flavors) are some perfectly apt names of the dishes. As the Nigiri Rocher: peppered king prawn with grains and pistachio cream which is inspired by the pralining of the well-known chocolate. The risottos rediscover their fusion side, made with non-creamed Japanese rice also in Milan yellow version (with saffron) such as the one with prawns, avocado, peppers and white truffle cream or the one with a mix of salmon, sea bream, tuna and prawns with olives , capers and basil. Nagiri and sashimi from € 14, risottini from € 18.

Via Chizzolini, 2 (corner Piero della Francesca)

Particular Milan

A spacious garden in a large internal courtyard in the Porta Romana area, a rarity in the city that proves to be extremely precious and appreciated. One year after its opening, Particolare Milano is preparing to recreate a real vegetable garden from which to obtain supplies, in line with the philosophy of the kitchen immediately developed by chef Andrea Cutillo, careful in the choice of ingredients from small producers.

Italian cuisine that does not fear fusion cues, but without excess. Like the crispy ravioli with sausage, broccoli and provola, made with rice flour as per Asian tradition. And the encounters between north and south, like the paccheri di Gragnano, Genoese of ossobuco and gremolada.

Zero waste philosophy starting from the aperitif, entirely from restaurants, created from the menu of the day.

6-course freehand tasting menu of the chef with wine pairing for € 60.
