School canteens: one in three is irregular

According to the judges, it is an educational and socialization issue, but also to promote equality among all pupils

At school, when you have lunch in the canteen, you have to eat the dishes offered by the meal service: it is no longer permitted to bring a sandwich from home. This was established by the United Sections of the Cassation, accepting the appeal of the Municipality of Turin: the Court of Appeal's ruling was reversed which allowed parents to prepare a meal at home for pupils who preferred it at the canteen. The judges thus explain (here the complete sentence) their decision: «La pedagogical function of the canteen time it can only be predicted in terms of collective catering in the context of an educational offer for this purpose ".

It is an educational and socialization issue, therefore, but also of promoting equality among all students: «The introduction of various and different domestic meals in school premises undermines the right of pupils and parents to the full egalitarian implementation of the training project including the canteen service, with possible violation of the principles of equality and non discrimination based on economic conditions. In addition to the right to health, "taking into account the hygienic and health risks of an untested individual meal".

Not only that, the judges write: the school is «a place where the development of the personality of individual students and the enhancement of individual diversity must be carried out within the limits of compatibility with the interests of other students and of the community, With« rules of conduct and« duties to which the pupils are bound , with« mutual respect, sharing and tolerance . And «parents are also required, with respect to the parents of pupils with opposing interests, to fulfill the duties of social solidarity, as well as economic .

The Councilor for Education of the City of Turin, Antonietta Di Martino, tried to reassure the disappointed parents of the sentence: "In light of the new pronouncement of the United Sections, the Administration will proceed to support the families and the schools in the next delicate organizational phases that follow from the aforementioned pronouncement .

But the parents who carry on the battle for the sandwich from home, on the Facebook group CaroMensa Turin, they replied: «The Cassation to Joint Sections has decided: the compulsory schooling free from the Constitution is to be thrown into the toilet, from now on, either pay the soup or skip the window (if they don't take the house away due to default) . However, families still have the right to bring their children home and bring them back to school after lunch.
