The decree was published in the Official Gazette: the Ministry of Health establishes that the maximum amount of Thc for cannabis sativa seeds, flour obtained from seeds and supplements containing derived food is 2 milligrams per kilo, while for oil obtained from seeds it is of 5 milligrams per kilo. The decree, as Coldiretti explains, "finally gives answers to the hundreds of farms that have invested in the cultivation of this type of plant".

Cultivation and use in Italy

In fact, there are more and more farms that bet on this plant and the cultivated land in Italy, in five years they have increased tenfold, going from 400 hectares in 2013 to almost 4 thousand in 2018: in recent years the production of food with THC has also increased exponentially, such as biscuits, taralli, bread, flour, oil, but also cottage cheese, tofu and a drink vegan. Cannabis also produces oils used in cosmetics, resins and natural fabrics, as well as eco bricks and pellets that ensure clean combustion.

The cultivation of hemp extends throughout the peninsula, and in reality it is not a novelty for our country: up to the 1940s, in fact, with almost 100 thousand hectares of cultivated land, Italy was the second largest producer in the worldafter the Soviet Union. The decline, as Coldiretti explained, was due to the industrialization and diffusion of synthetic fibers on the market, as well as the international campaign against drugs.

There is still a law that also regulates the sector that involves the marketing of cannabis sativa derivatives, after the restrictive sentence of the end of May, issued by the United Sections of the Cassation. "For the cultivation and sale of plants, flowers and seeds with a low content of psychotropic principle, an estimated potential turnover is estimated in over 40 million euros , concludes Coldiretti, "with a significant employment impact due to the involvement of hundreds of farms".
